Hello, this is Tatsuya. I posted 「学校では教えない英語の微妙なニュアンスの違い!イメージは勉強を加速させる!」 in this morning. If you haven’t seen it yet, I want you to see it immediately. First, you had better understand the post written by Japanese. I will describe it directly so that you can understand easily. And the post is a little difference from a Japanese post. Anyway, let’s start to introduce them.
“as” and “since” are used to tell old information
“will” and “be going to”
Critical difference
The critical difference is whether you have decided plans already. “will” is used to describe a future which you decide on the spot. On the other hands , “be going to” is used to describe a future which you have decided already.
Ex. (will) A: Could you close the door?
B: OK. I will.
Ex. (be going to) A: What are you doing during summer vacation?
B: I’m going to go to TDL.
other differences
be going to⇒you predict an almost sound future
you predict a future under circumstances
“as” and “since” , “because”
“as” and “since” are used to tell old information.
They are used to tell old information, so someone who you talk to knows the reason already. They are brought to the start of the phase.
Ex. Since he didn’t have any money, he couldn’t buy food last night.
⇒It is very clear that he is poor.
Ex.As my wife got pregnant, I need to get a job.
⇒They talk under the recognition that we must work if we will be blessed with children.
Those expression is very formal, so we can usually use “so”. And they are used when a counterpart didn’t know information, so we can’t use them when someone ask something using “Why~”. When you use “Why~”, you don’t know the reason. In other words, you will know new information.
“because” is used to tell new information
“as” and “since”are used to tell old information. On the other hands,”because” is used to tell new information. You can use it when you are asked using “Why~”. “since” and “as” can’t be used then. And how to correctly use is “S V~ because S’ V’~.”
Ex. I bought a new watch because I got promoted!
⇒The promotion is a new information for listeners.
Ex. A: Why is that lady crying so much?
B: Because she misses her boyfriend.
smaller difference
“because” can be modified by “simply”, “just”, “only” and “partly” and so on. On the other hands, “as” and “since” can’t be done that. However, they can be modified by “especially” to tell a special reason.
Ex. He stole some fruits at the market just because he was hungry.
Ex. He could not control his emotion, especially since his mother passed away all of sudden.
